Karongi - formerly Kibuye - is one of Lake Kivu's most scenic towns, with palm-fringed shores, terraced hills and calm waters ideal for boat trips to Napoleon and other islands.
The town offers a quieter lakeside experience than Rubavu, with excellent lodges perched on peninsulas overlooking the lake and distant Congolese mountains.
Karongi lies midway along Lake Kivu's eastern shore, connecting Rubavu in the north with Rusizi and Nyungwe in the south.
